Oversized sweater: a knitting pattern for your measurements

Oversized is not “a sweater two sizes up”. Knit the XL of a regular pattern and the sleeves come out too long, the neck too wide and the shoulders slide off. Here is how a proper roomy fit is calculated.

How much ease to add

Ease is how much bigger the finished sweater is than your bust: fitted — 4 cm, classic — 10 cm, relaxed — 18 cm, oversized — 28 cm or more. In the size M example (bust 92 cm) the finished chest is 121.8 cm.

Worked example: oversized drop-shoulder sweater

This is real output from the builder for size M (bust 92 cm, neck 35.5 cm, upper arm 29 cm, length 60 cm) at a gauge of 22 sts and 30 rows per 10 cm (4 in).

Why oversized means drop shoulders

The body is 28 cm wider than you, so the shoulder seam falls onto the arm. A drop-shoulder construction allows for that: a straight armhole and a sleeve shortened by exactly as much as the shoulder drops. Knit an oversized fit with a set-in sleeve from a regular pattern and the sleeve ends up 5–8 cm too long.

The neckline stays your own size — otherwise the sweater slips off the shoulders.

Tips

FAQ

How many sizes up is oversized?

Think in ease, not sizes: 28–35 cm over your bust. Keep the neckline and sleeve length to your own measurements.

Can I knit an oversized raglan?

Yes, but a raglan with lots of ease gives a deep armhole and a lot of fabric under the arm. For the classic oversized look a drop shoulder works better.

How long should an oversized sweater be?

Usually 60–70 cm from the shoulder. A cropped oversized sweater is 45–52 cm.
