How to read a cable chart

Before any chart with cables.

How to do it

  1. An empty square is a knit stitch on the right side; a square with a dot is a purl.
  2. A cable symbol spans as many squares as stitches being crossed (2/2 spans 4 squares).
  3. The white band of the symbol shows the stitches going ON TOP; the gray or dotted one shows those going UNDERNEATH (held in back).
  4. Read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right, working the stitches "as they present themselves".

Tip

Count the rows between crosses: for a 2/2 rope cable it is usually every 6th or 8th row.
