Lively Loop

Kitchener stitch (grafting)

An invisible join of live stitches: shoulders, socks, underarms.

back needlefront needlethreaded needle
Kitchener stitch (grafting): two needles parallel, wrong sides together. The tapestry needle passes through the stitches of the front and back needles in turn, and the yarn mimics a row of stockinette: the seam is invisible

How to do it

  1. Hold two needles parallel, wrong sides together, and thread the yarn onto a tapestry needle.
  2. Front needle: first stitch knitwise, slip it off; second stitch purlwise, leave it on.
  3. Back needle: first stitch purlwise, slip it off; second stitch knitwise, leave it on.
  4. Repeat, snugging the yarn to match the size of the stitches.
