Knit stitch

The foundation of stockinette: on the right side every stitch looks like a little V.

1. Yarn in back. Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle from front to back: the needles form a cross, right behind left

2. Wrap the working yarn counterclockwise around the right needle: the yarn lies between the needles

3. Pull the yarn through the stitch toward you: a new stitch is on the right needle. Slip the old stitch off the left needle

How to do it

  1. Working yarn at the back of the work.
  2. Insert the right needle into the stitch on the left needle from front to back, left to right.
  3. Wrap the yarn around the right needle counterclockwise.
  4. Draw the yarn through the stitch and slip the old stitch off the left needle.

Tip

Stitches should slide freely along the needle. If they are tight, relax your hand rather than changing needles.

Common mistake

Yarn in front instead of at the back creates an extra yarn over.
