Long floats and catching

When the chart has more than 5 sts of one color in a row.

too long
1. A float longer than 5 sts (≈ 2.5 cm) will snag fingers. Such a float needs to be caught
caught in the middle
2. Catching floats: in the middle of the float, lay the unused yarn over the working yarn and knit the next stitch: the float is pinned to the fabric. Do not catch in the same spot row after row or the color will show through

How to do it

  1. Count the stitches without the second color: if there are more than 5 (or the float is > 2.5 cm), catch the yarn in the middle.
  2. Catching: lay the unused yarn over the working yarn, knit the stitch, then continue knitting as usual.
  3. In the following rows, catch in a different spot, shifted by 1–2 sts.

Tip

The "Colorwork" editor on the site highlights floats that are too long automatically.

Common mistake

Catching in the same column row after row makes the color show through on the right side.
