What is colorwork

Norwegian yokes, snowflakes, patterned bands: several colors in one row.

RS
1. Right side: two yarns are used in each row, every stitch is one of the two colors. The pattern is made of colored Vs
WS: floats
2. Wrong side: the color not in use is carried across the back: this is a float. Floats should lie loosely without puckering the fabric

How to do it

  1. Use at most 2 colors per row: this makes tension easier to manage.
  2. Each stitch is worked in the color shown on the chart, while the other yarn is carried at the back: that is a float.
  3. Floats should not be longer than 5 sts (≈ 2.5 cm); otherwise, catch them.
  4. The motif is drawn on a chart: one square = one stitch. You can create your own chart in the "Colorwork" editor.

Tip

For your first colorwork, choose a woolly yarn without a halo (not cotton, not mohair): it "grips" and hides unevenness.

Contrast matters more than color: check a black-and-white photo of the balls; the motif should be visible.

Common mistake

Three colors in a row on your first project make the tension uneven.
