Lively Loop

Yarn over

Lace (eyelets), buttonholes, decorative raglans.

left needleright needleyo
1. Yarn over (yo): bring the working yarn over the right needle from front to back, then work the next stitch. An extra loop of yarn appears on the needle
2. On the next row, work the yo as a regular stitch: a lace eyelet remains. A yo is +1 st, so there is always a decrease nearby

How to do it

  1. Before the next stitch, bring the yarn over the right needle from front to back.
  2. On the next row, work the yarn over like a regular stitch.

Tip

A yo adds 1 stitch. In lace there is always a decrease next to it so the stitch count stays the same: the "Lace charts" tab checks this.

Common mistake

Before a purl stitch, make the yo by wrapping the yarn all the way around the needle.
