Mattress stitch

Side seams, sleeve seams, setting in sleeves.

Mattress stitch: both pieces RS facing you. The needle picks up the horizontal bars between the first and second stitch, alternating sides. Pull tight every 2–3 cm and the seam hides inside

How to do it

  1. Pieces right side facing you, edge to edge.
  2. With a tapestry needle, alternately catch the bars between the first and second stitches: one piece, then the other.
  3. Pull the yarn snug every 2–3 cm.

Tip

In stockinette the seam is invisible. That is why ribbing edges use 4k+2: symmetrical edges seam neatly.
