Lively Loop

Picking up stitches along an edge

Neckline, bands, vest armholes, picking up at the underarm.

needleneedle goes under edgepiece edge: new sts come from the fabric
Pick up and knit: RS facing, the needle goes into the fabric under the edge stitch, catches the yarn and draws out a new stitch. Along a vertical edge pick up ≈ 3 sts for every 4 rows; along a horizontal edge, every stitch

How to do it

  1. Right side facing you. Insert the needle between the edge stitch and the next stitch.
  2. Catch the yarn and pull up a loop.
  3. Along a vertical edge, pick up ≈ 3 sts for every 4 rows; along a horizontal edge, pick up every stitch.
  4. The pattern builder calculates the number of stitches.

Tip

If there are holes at the underarm corners, pick up 1–2 extra stitches and knit them together on the next round.
