Lively Loop

Crochet-hook bobble (3 double crochets)

A plump bobble that Japanese charts work with a crochet hook right on the knitting: faster than a knitted bobble and more even.

Chart symbol

How to do it

  1. Insert the hook into the next stitch on the left needle as if to knit, pull up a loop and drop the stitch from the left needle.
  2. Chain 2 — this stands in for the height of the first double crochet.
  3. Yarn over, insert the hook into the same stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on the hook. Repeat twice more — 4 loops on the hook.
  4. Yarn over and draw through all loops on the hook.
  5. Move the loop from the hook to the right needle.

Tip

Half double crochet version: pull up the loops but don’t work them off two at a time — keep them all on the hook and draw through all at once at the end.

Chain version: chain 3–5, then join the last chain to the first.

Use a hook the same size as the needles or half a size smaller.

Common mistake

Loops pulled up too short make a flat bobble. Pull them up to about the height of 2 rows.
