Three-stitch knot
A small raised “seed” in Japanese lace and borders. The stitch count stays the same.
How to do it
- Insert the right needle into the 3rd stitch on the left needle.
- Lift it over the 1st and 2nd stitches and off the needle.
- Knit 1, yarn over, knit 1.
Tip
3 stitches before, 3 after: the yarn over replaces the lifted stitch.
Some charts use a variation where a decrease replaces one of the knits after the knot. Then the stitch count drops — check the symbol next to it.
In the next, wrong-side row, purl the yarn over.
Common mistake
A tight knot pulls in the neighbouring stitches: lift the stitch loosely, don’t tug.
